Evelyn Inez Lara
May 21st, 1938 - April 29th, 2016
Evelyn Inez Martinez was born on May 21, 1938 at home in the San Luis Valley in Las Mesites. Evelyn was the oldest of 9 children. Evelyn didn't let her small stature of 4'11" and 90 pounds limit her courage in hard work. She was literally her mother, Juanita's right hand in raising her 8 younger siblings, including 2 sisters and 6 brothers. As soon as Evelyn was tall enough to see over the counter, her father, Victor put her to work in his Las Mesites country store. With Evelyn's strong work ethic and leadership abilities, she was able to support herself at the Mercurdy Boarding High School. The same work ethic enabled her to support herself as she attended Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was one of the organizers of the College Sabbath School. Her group consisted of theology students presenting the Sabbath School lesson. Evelyn was also into community outreach. She organized her group to visit and sing with the nursing home residents. Each summer between her college years, she worked in the Lincoln area selling Christian books. Evelyn obtained her associate degree in medical records at Union College. The next year, she moved back to the Denver area and joined the Spanish Seventh-day Adventist group downtown. She organized them to save and earn money for purchasing the Spanish SDA Church. She was one of the founding members of the present Denver Spanish Church. Evelyn was a deaconess in the church. It was at this church where she met her husband, Delfino Lara. Their daughter, Miranda was baptized in the Denver Spanish Church. Years later, Evelyn was a member of the Denver South Church where she was involved in a ministry to the "shut-ins" - senior people who could not make it to the church service each week. This ministry took her to private homes and nursing homes. She would deliver the sermon on cassette tape and Sabbath school quarterlies. Her prayers in English or Spanish were uplifting to all who were blessed to hear them.
