Evelyn Crum Shuler, 92, of Columbia, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2011. She was born April 4, 1918 in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, the daughter of Harold Hammond Crum of Rowesville, SC and Nathalie Carson Crum of Charleston, SC. Evelyn attended local schools in Blackville, SC and in Orangeburg, SC and graduated from Orangeburg High School in 1936. She attended Lander College. She married Nolan P. Shuler, Jr. of Holly Hill, SC., in 1942, shortly after which Mr. Shuler was deployed with the U.S. Army to Northern Africa and Europe during World War II. Many love letters were exchanged between them during the War, which they each saved until they died. Upon his return, they moved to New Bern, North Carolina where Mr. Shuler worked with First Citizens Bank and Trust. The Shulers have two daughters, Patricia Jacqueline, born in 1947 and Mary Carolyn born in 1950. Evelyn and Nolan moved to Columbia in 1957, where they lived until their deaths. The Shulers enjoyed being ?snow birds? to Florida for winters, following Nolan?s retirement from South Carolina National Bank. Evelyn was a duplicate bridge life master. She enjoyed fishing, and especially catching more than anyone else. She and Nolan were both actively involved in service to the Columbia community. The Shulers enjoyed their time at Lake Wateree as much as they did their extensive travels. Evelyn and Nolan joined Trenholm Road United Methodist Church in approximately 1960, where they were members until their deaths. Evelyn was preceded in death by her beloved Nolan. Surviving are her children, Patricia Jacqueline ?Jackie? Shuler, Carolyn Shuler ?Carol? Sanders and her husband Robert L. Sanders, Jr., five grandchildren, Kristen Holstein Moore and her husband Terry Wayne Moore, Ashlyn Holstein Savage and her husband Andrew John Savage, IV, James Walter Patterson and his wife Erica Frances Patterson, Courtney Sanders Moder and her husband Steven Paul Moder, and Robert Lee Sanders, III; and eight great-grandchildren, Andrew John Savage, V, Connor Thomas Moore, Thomas Henry Savage, Macie Elizabeth Moore, Cooper Moder, Ryan Moder, Cleome Hubbell, and Karlyn Hubbel. Greenlawn Memorial Park

Greenlawn Memorial Park

Greenlawn Memorial Park is one of Columbia's most historic perpetual care cemeteries. This gorgeous setting combines serenity, natural beauty, and diligent care for generations of families. North Lake, located in the center of our park, offers a water feature and is the site of many local events, including an annual Easter sunrise service, a Greenlawn tradition for over 50 years. The park also has a veteran's section, private family estates, a columbarium with niches for cremated remains, and an incredible granite mausoleum....
