Fr. Eugene Joseph McCarthy, age 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 15, 2023 under the care of Continuum Care Hospice and the Windsor of Venice team. Fr. McCarthy was born in on October 26, 1933 to Margaret (O’Regan) & Timothy McCarthy in The Bungalow Church Cross in Skibbereen, Co. Cork, Ireland. He was ordained on June 19, 1960 in Dublin, Ireland and moved to Florida then where he spent the next 63 years building churches and schools and being a huge part of the development of many communities; Fort Lauderdale, Lee High Acres, Ft. Myers Beach, and Marco Island. Fr. McCarthy will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews in Ireland and also extended family and friends in Sarasota, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret & Tim McCarthy and his brothers & sisters, Denis, John, Maureen and Catherine. A viewing for Fr. McCarthy will be held at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, Florida on Monday, May 22, 2023 from 11:45AM-1:30PM with a Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 1:30PM. A graveside service will follow at Venice Memorial Gardens. Farley Funeral Home in Venice is handling the arrangements. A message of condolences may be sent by visiting www.farleyfuneralhome.com.
