Dr. Fred D. Gillispie, Jr, D.Ed, 85, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 10, 2023 at his home. Born May 25,1938 in Lynchburg, VA he was the son of the late Frederick “Fred” and Georgia Gillispie. Survived by the love of his life, Fay Shorter Gillispie (married 61 years) and his son, Frederick “Rick” Gillipsie, III of Palmyra, VA. He was a graduate of E.C. Glass High School, Lynchburg College (BA), UVA (MA) and Walden University (D.Ed). He was a life-long educator – the other love of his life and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He worked for the Lynchburg City School system at several schools including being the principal at Dearington and Paul Munro Elementary schools. Upon retirement he continued to teach for several small schools including National/National Business College and Bluefield University. He served on the board of the Lynchburg Education Association for many years, even after retiring from the school system. He was always available and willing to help anyone who needed help and actively volunteered at Centenary, Meals on Wheels and for the Lynchburg Democrats at their table outside of Linkhorne Middle School for many elections. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Lynchburg Meals on Wheels or the Lynchburg Humane Society. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-8- pm at the Diuguid Waterlick Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 16, 2023 at Fort Hill Memorial Park with Chaplain Troy Mays officiating. Diuguid Waterlick Chapel, 434-237-2722, is serving the family.
