Frederick Jay Scott
May 6th, 1936 - April 26th, 2024
Frederick Jay Scott, 87, of Denver, passed away at The Denver Hospice on April 26, 2024, due to complications after a hip fracture. His family was by his side as he was called into eternal life with Jesus Christ.
Fred was born May 6, 1936, in Athol, Kansas, the only child of Melvin and Martha Scott. When he was 2 years old, he moved with his mother to Englewood, Colorado. His father had come to Englewood a year earlier, looking for better job opportunities in the later years of the Depression. Fred attended Englewood and Littleton schools, and graduated from Englewood High School in 1954. He completed a mechanical drafting course at Engineering Drafting School in Denver in 1955. He worked as a draftsman/electro-mechanical designer throughout his career. His longest tenure was at Swisslog, where he worked from 1976 until his retirement in 2001. He continued working there on a contract basis until 2007.
Fred served in the Colorado Air National Guard from 1954 to 1962 and was called to active duty in 1961 to 1962.
Fred married Ethel Rogahn on July 2, 1966 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Denver. Fred and Ethel had three daughters: Laurie, Karen, and Sheila. Family was important to Fred. He was a reliable, steady presence and never missed a birthday or event in the lives of his kids. It was a family tradition to eat together at a restaurant every Sunday after church. He was a problem solver, always willing to help his kids find a job, a car, or fix something around the house. He loved classic cars, airplanes, country western music, and always had a Dr. Pepper close at hand. He was fond of Mustangs and took his red 1995 Ford Mustang GT to several auto shows, as well as the black 2002 Ford Mustang Coupe he purchased later and still owned at the time of his death. He also liked to show off the collection of model cars he had in his den. As a young man, he had a boat and enjoyed waterskiing with his uncle Orville and his family. Fred was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church for 40 years and at Augustana Lutheran Church the last 11 years of his life. All who knew him will miss his gentle presence and his genuine concern for others.
Fred was preceded in death by his grandparents Elwood and Della Scott, and Fred and Emma Winkelmann; and his parents Melvin and Martha Scott. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ethel; daughters Laura “Laurie,” Karen Kisch (Jack), and Sheila; and cousins Ann Meade Winkelmann, Ken Mennenga (Judi), and Rodney Scott (Susan).
A memorial service for Fred will be held at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5000 E. Alameda Ave., Denver, CO 80246, on Tuesday, May 21 at 11 a.m., followed by lunch, and inurnment at Fairmount Cemetery at 2 p.m.
Memorial gifts may be made to Augustana Lutheran Church or the Denver Rescue Mission.
