Gary D. Porter, 76, passed away in Melbourne, FL on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
He was born in Brattleboro VT on January 3, 1948, to parents Fred O. and Dorothy T. Porter. Gary grew up in South Royalton with his brother Dwight.
Gary graduated from So. Royalton High School with the Class of 1966. He then went on to Graduate from Vermont Technical College with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1968. Shortly after college he married Marylou Robbins of Chelsea, VT. They had two sons Shawn and Chad.
He enlisted in the Navy and went through Boot Camp and was in the first Graduating Company at the New Navy Training Center in Orlando, FL. Following graduation, he enrolled in the Electronics Tech School and graduated as an ETN (Nuclear). He served on the USS Proteus (AS-19) working on submarines stationed in Guam. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.
After the Navy, Gary moved to New Hampshire working in Electronics and earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Lowell Tech College. Later in life he went to chef school and his passion was always the Ocean. As a Captain, he lived on his sailboat doing sunset Sailing Charters with gourmet dinners in the Caribbean – St. Thomas and St. John. Over the past several years he worked in his electronics lab on his vision of Free Energy for everyone. He had many local friends in Melbourne FL who knew him as the “Crazy Captain.”
Gary loved his Children and grandchildren. He lived a unique life. Always charting his own course. Kind and always giving to others less fortunate than himself.
He is predeceased by his parents, Fred O. Porter and Dorothy T. Porter.
He is survived by his sons Shawn and his wife Lyn, Chad and his wife Laresa; along with grandchildren Kilee, Keegan, Juliana and Jaidyn, as well as, his brother Dwight and his wife Mary, nephew Michael and wife Priscila and their children Travis, Noah and Nicholas. Family is planning services and interment at a later date.
