Gayle "Urfer" Arden Maze
May 2nd, 1934 - October 31st, 2014
Gayle Urfer Maze May 2, 1934 – Oct. 31, 2014 Edward Frank Maze Feb. 28, 1925 – July 28, 2014 Ed and Gayle were the most unlikely of couples. He had led a conventional life, found early success and, except for a few close friends, kept to himself. Gayle, on the other hand, had made a point of bending, even breaking, social norms. She consistently sought independence in a time when that was not expected of women. She was gregarious, open and befriended a cast of characters. For 25 years Gayle lived unmarried until a mutual friend introduced her to Ed. That first date, immersed in conversation, they shut down the Bread and Ink Café on Hawthorne Blvd. A few months later they were married on Valentines Day, 1998. With no children of his own, Ed instantly became a family man. He delighted in shopping sprees with his young grandchildren; in traveling and camping in a crowded RV; and in walking the beautiful bride of his stepson down the aisle. Gayle helped Ed reunite with his surviving brothers and family in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their sixteen years of marriage was an expansive one. They traveled the continental United States, Hawaii and Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and China. In West Linn they transformed a house built by Ed into a beautiful home where they hosted a growing family and many friends. And there were the projects they worked on together, like the pharmacy exhibit at the Museum of the Oregon Territory. Ultimately they took care of one another as age and ailments bedeviled them. They are survived by Harry and Courtney Brod; Charles and Beth Brod and their three girls Lily, Grace, and Anne; Claude “Keek” Hottendorf and Mo Duffy and their children Kuuleilani, Tara, Harper and Quinn; Daniela Brod and her children Aaron and Nora; and Tracy and Peter Hyland and their children Eva and Liam. Gayle is survived by her brother Kenneth Urfer. Edward is survived by his niece Phyllis Krueger and nephew Jerry Mazurkiewicz and their families. A celebration of Ed and Gayle's lives was held on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at the Museum of the Oregon Territory in theTumwater room located at 211 Tumwater Drive, Oregon City, Oregon. Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Funeral Home
At Wilhelm's Portland Memorial, we have a rich history dating back to 1901 when we became the first crematory west of the Mississippi River, known then as The Portland Cremation Association. Our historic chapel, marked by its cornerstone placed on February 5th, 1901, has stood the test of time. Today, our memorial site spans 8 stories, approximately 7 miles of corridors of beautifully preserved architecture, and the largest mausoleum on the west coast, spanning 2.5 city blocks....
