Gayle E. Zingerman was 79 years old, of Des Moines, Iowa, then New York, NY, Minneapolis, Mn., Venice and Nokomis, Florida, passed away on Sunday December 30th, 2018, in town of Sarasota, Florida. Funeral Services will be held at 2pm Thursday 1/3/19 at Chabad of Venice 21560 Angela Lane, Venice Florida 34293, Burial will follow right after at Venice Memorial Gardens. Gayle was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to Isadore & Rose Friedman on December 9th, 1939. Gayle went to school in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated from Roosevelt H.S. Then she attended and graduated from the college of Staten Island, New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1987, after also achieving a Bachelors of Arts in History at Brooklyn College. Gayle’s personal life was quite an incredible undertaking. From Des Moines, Iowa and the Corn fields of Iowa to Brooklyn, New York she married very young at 18 years old and then had 3 children, she successfully raised and nurtured. Gayle was also instrumental in establishing the “House of Art” museum in her home and was well re known for her Art and Antiquities knowledge throughout United Stated and New York. After her first husband died Dr. Cohen, shortly thereafter Gayle connected again with her High School sweetheart and fiance some 30+ years later after they first were engaged. Mr. Jerry Zingerman and Mrs. Gayle Cohen married on November 22nd, 1992 and have been together for over 26 tremendous and joyous years. In June of 1994 moved from Minnesota to Venice, Florida. Traveling all over the world, to New Zealand, Tahiti, Israel, Russia, Italy, Baltic States, and the United States. Cruised all over the Caribbean and South and Central America. The Zingerman’s were instrumental in the purchasing of the new building the Chabad established, and the purchase of the second (2) Torah for the Chabad. Also, have been ongoing contributors for over 10 years at the Chabad. Gayle’s love was the Chabad and helping people and Organizations she felt strongly about. Gayle was very passionate and determined in her professional and personal life. Gayle also had a love of plants and flowers which she dedicated to her entire home landscaping and yard. Gayle was a tremendous people person and had superb networking skills. To know her was to love her. At her final home, Sarasota Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation center, everyone who came in contact with her fell in love with her. Gayle played A leadership role in collaborating with NYSNA in initiating and implementing an Amendment to the 1991 Mental Hygiene Law to include psychiatric RNs as designated reporters. Gayle worked as a Psychiatric Nurse for Visiting Nurse services, mobile Crisis team, of NYC. Also, Maimonides Medical Center, New York, N.Y. Gayle received the 1986 Outstanding Nurse Award for exceptional performance. Gayle specialized in working with schizophrenic patients and those needing Psychiatric services. Gayle also received Health Risk Management’s 1994 commitment to excellence Award based on outstanding clinical judgment and cost effectiveness. Gayle was a fierce advocate for patient rights and quite often challenged the status quo with Insurance companies, Doctors and Hospital Administrations. Due to her tenacity, Gayle won 100% of her appeals. Gayle developed a “Documentation Handbook”, which was distributed to the multi-discipline staff. Gayle also received the “National Nursing Honor Society – Mu Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Thea Tou International. Gayle also spent several years volunteering at Venice Regional Hospital in the Emergency room as well as several other locations within the Hospital. Preceded in death by David Cohen and her daughter Wendy Pheffer, and stepson Neil Zingerman. She is survived by her husband Jerry Zingerman, son’s Steven (Bianca) Cohen and Jeffrey (Joanne) Cohen, granddaughter Lisa O’Leary and grandson Justin Cohen. Stepson Mark Zingerman, daughter in law Rachel Zingerman, grandson’s Max and Nathan Zingerman, great grandson Johnny O’Leary, and several Cousins and close relatives and numerous friends. Gayle will be greatly missed and never forgotten. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Honor of Gayle’s memory to the Chabad of Venice.
