Geneva "Louise" Louise Wimmer

Geneva "Louise" Wimmer, 90, former Carlton County Veteran's Service Officer passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013 in Sunnyside Health Care Center. She was born March 16, 1923 in Pokegama Township near Pine City to Jesse and Mary Jewell. Louise graduated from Pine City High School. After high school she worked at the Munsingwear Company in Minneapolis until joining the U.S. Coast Guard in May of 1943. She worked in morale, rehabilitation and personnel. After her discharge from the service, she returned to Pine City. She married Frank "Bud" Wimmer on November 20, 1943 and they made their home in Carlton and together raised two children. They were married 63 years until Bud's death in 2009. Louise was very active in the community, belonging to PTA, Ladies Aid, V.F.W. and it's Auxiliary; DAV, American Legion, "Women are Veterans Too" Organization, and J.M. Paine Memorial Presbyterian Church. They later moved to Moose Lake where they resided for more than 20 years until failing health forced them to move back to Carlton. Louise started working at the Carlton County Veteran's Service Office in 1962. In 1965 she became the first woman Veteran's Service Officer in the state of Minnesota. She served in this capacity for 20 years until retiring in 1985. Serving her country and being able to help veterans was of the utmost importance to her. She was a loving wife and mother and will be missed dearly. Louise was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bud Wimmer; twin sister, Lucille Haug and her husband, Bob; and brothers, Richard and Leon. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Duane) Johnson; son, Kirk (Sharon) Wimmer; grandchildren, Jodi Johnson, Karl (Cassy) Wimmer, and Derek Wimmer; three great grandchildren, Bryce, Caleb, and Abigail; sister-in-law, Madelynne Evenson; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Sunnyside Health Care Center (past and present) for the wonderful care given to Louise these last years. A gathering of family and friends was held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 in the Fireside Room of Atkins Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet with military honors accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Disabled American Veterans.
