George Young Ballentine Jr.

George Y. Ballentine, Jr. of Venice, FL, passed away on June 3, 2018. He was 88 years old. George was born on October 6, 1929 in Newport News, VA, to George Young Ballentine and Adele Virginia Carter. He grew up in nearby Hilton Village, VA and attended Newport News public schools and later attended apprentice school at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, where he was later employed as an electrician and hull designer, teaching naval architecture and marine engineering at that company. George graduated in 1952 from the University of the South in Sewanee, TN with a B.A. with Honors. He then attended Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, where George graduated with a Master's in theology in 1955. He then completed a second Master's degree in Arts from the Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA in 1970. George was an ordained Episcopal minister since June 1955 to his death. He served churches in Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., and Southwest FL. George was an active member in several organizations, including the Sons of the American Revolution since 1951, where he served as Chaplain of the Saramana Chapter, Sarasota from 1981-1986. He was brother of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity; a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots (AOPA) and Silver Wings Fraternity; and long time member of Orean Historical Society. George was a licensed commercial airplane pilot, amateur astronomer, and licensed amateur and commercial radio operator. George is survived his two sons, David Carter of Stockhom, Sweden and John Michael of Gainesville, FL and his grandchildren, Mawell and Julia. He is predeceased by his wife, Emma Jean.
