George Slater
December 2nd, 1928 - October 17th, 2018
George Edwin Slater, 89, of Venice, FL (previously of New London, CT) passed away after a long illness on October 17, 2018. George was born on December 2, 1928 to Edwin P. Slater and Margaret V. (Brindley) Slater in Fall River, MA. George is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Patricia Mary (Blanchard) Slater. He is also survived by his five children (Wendy Slater (Venice, FL), Pamela Slater Flynn (New London, CT), Eric Slater (Venice, FL), Bruce Slater (Sarasota, FL) and Christine Slater Masura (Nokomis, FL)), eight grandchildren (Caitlin Flynn, Patrick Flynn, Caroline Flynn, Sarah Slater, Mary Slater, Danny Masura, Timothy Masura and Marcy Masura), one great-grandson (Tyler Slater), and two siblings (Marion (Slater) Appleby and Ralph Slater). He was predeceased by his sister (Ruth (Slater) Root) and two grandsons (Lawrence Flynn and Bobby Masura). George graduated high school from Northfield Mount Herman, earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut, and a master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and studied abroad in Turkey. After his return to the U.S., he attended Naval Officer Candidate School and spent 20 years serving in the U.S. Navy, in both active duty and the Navy Reserves. George had a long career in banking in Connecticut and real estate in Venice, FL, followed by a long retirement. He spent many years participating in Rotary Club International in both Connecticut and Venice. During George's youth, he spent many happy summers sailing and fishing with his family at Groton Long Point in CT. Since 1976, he lived happily in Venice FL on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. He was an avid bridge player. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church at 425 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey, FL 34229 on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 11 am.
