Gladys "Gladdie" Cecelia Milberger, 84 of Cloquet died Saturday, November 5, 2011 in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. She was born Nov. 4, 1927 in International Falls to Olga and Herman Mattson. When she was four years old her mother died and Gladys went to live with Tom and Anna Johnson in Brevator. Gladys graduated from Cloquet High School on May 31, 1945. She waitressed at many local restaurants in Cloquet during the 1940's and early 1950's. She worked at the paper mill during the late 1950's but had to quit when she married Vernie on March 17, 1959 as that was the paper mill's rule then because Vernie was already employed there. She stayed home during the 1960's and raised five children. In the 1970's and 80's she worked as a cook at the Cloquet Country Club and the Night Club Bar. She was always known for her great cooking and made an excellent clam chowder and mojakka. Gladys enjoyed spending time with her family and doing crossword puzzles, which is why she usually always won at scrabble. She also loved doing jigsaw puzzles and was probably the best puzzle maker her family has ever seen. Gladys was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was a long time member of the Finlandia Beach Club. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Vernie; daughter, Sandy Anderson; brother, Ed Mattson; sisters, Viola Margaret Mattson and Eileen Mattson; and foster brothers and sisters, Roy, Wilho, John, William, Dagmar, Vienna, Mayme, and Verna. She is survived by three sons, Rick Moen and Jeff Milberger both of Cloquet, and Karl (Nicole) Milberger of Mahtowa; daughter, Linda Anderson of Cloquet; six grandchildren, Derek Moen, Gerri (Mike) Bond, Cory (Jen) Anderson, Jim Anderson, Kelli (Joe) Sayler, and Tiffani (Kevin Ott) Anderson.; 14 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Muriel Johnson, Mary Warner, and Mardel Milberger; and many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. The family would like to thank the staffs at Suncrest and Inter-Faith Care Center for the loving care they gave to Gladys and her family. Memorial Services were held on Thursday, November 10, 2011 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. A time of lunch and fellowship followed in the church social hall. Inurnment was in St. Matthew's Cemetery in Esko. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.
