Gregory "Greg" Scott Oldfield

OLDFIELD, Gregory Scott, died peacefully at the age of 68 on December 5, 2022, surrounded by family following a courageous battle with ALS. Greg was born on January 14, 1954, the son of Albert L. and Delores J. Oldfield in Vandalia, IL. Greg grew up in Vandalia, graduating from Vandalia High School where he played basketball, baseball and golf, a sport which developed into a hobby that he enjoyed for many years afterward. He went on to attend Lakeland College and Eastern Illinois University before graduating from Illinois State University with a degree in business administration. It was there Greg met the love of his life, Joy. Greg soon became the sound technician for Joy’s band, and she continued to entertain him for the rest of their lives, singing and playing piano in their living room. Greg and Joy married in 1977, moving to Vandalia, Illinois, where Greg joined the family business, Oldfield Tire, working in Mattoon, Effingham, and eventually the main location in Vandalia, where he worked for 20 years. His businesses eventually expanded to include car sales and rentals as well as a car wash. In 2002, new business opportunities prompted Greg and Joy’s relocation to Florida, where Greg continued his career in automotive businesses, operating Midas Auto Experts and Oldfield Auto Sales, both in Venice. He had a loyal customer following who were drawn to his down-to-earth nature, sincerity and sense of humor. Greg cared very much for his employees, mentoring them and considering them part of his family. Greg and Joy eventually fulfilled their dream of buying a home on Venice Island, where they lived with their two West Highland terriers, loyal companions until their passing at the age of 17. He loved being a father and grandfather, and one of the highlights of his day was receiving FaceTime calls from his grandchildren, which were frequently made without their parents knowledge. Greg was an active member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Venice. Greg was diagnosed with ALS in 2019, and Joy was a loving and constant caregiver for Greg until his death. His strength and courage throughout his battle with ALS was an inspiration and gift to his family. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Delores, and an older brother, Randy. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 46 years, Joy. M. Oldfield, and three beloved daughters, Carey Powers (Mike), Courtney Bassett (Mike), and Chelsea Naylor (George); and 5 grandchildren: Grayson, Parker and Collins Cate Bassett, Cecilia and James Naylor. Greg is also survived by his brother, David Oldfield (Dawn), and their children, Heather House, Christopher Oldfield and Nathan Oldfield. The family is grateful for the support of family and friends during Greg's illness. A celebration of life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Venice on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 2:00PM.
