A celebration of life service for Dr. Harry Eugene ?Sid? Varney, 83, of Columbia will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home. On-line condolences may be sent to www.greenlawn-columbia.com. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home with the arrangements. Dr. Varney was born on December 22, 1927 in Powell, PA to the late Ira Dean Varney and Marquerite Harris Varney. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina 1949. He played football for UNC and played in two Sugar Bowls. He was an All American Baseball Player. Dr. Varney received his Ph.D. in 1968 at Duke University. He was Head Football Coach at Elon College from 1953-1958 and inducted in 1999 to the Elon College Sports Hall of Fame. Dr. Varney served as the Director at USC Florence from 1968-1969, the USC Dean of Applied and Professional Sciences 1970 -1994, and also the Dean of Nursing for several years. Dr. Varney received the Order of Palmetto in 1994 and was the former President of Athletic Hall of Fame. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Carmen Satterfield Varney; two sons, Dean W. Varney and his wife Shelby Varney & Kim Varney and his wife Wendy Varney; 5 grandchildren, Summer, Kasey, Todd, Scott, and Taylor Varney; 1 great-granddaughter, Sophia; a brother, John Varney; a host of other loving relatives and friends that will miss him dearly.
