Hazel Shepherd Burleigh
July 18th, 1910 - August 22nd, 2018
Hazel Shepherd Burleigh, 108, of Lynchburg and long- time resident of Concord, died Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joel Thomas Burleigh. Born July 18, 1910 in Appomattox, she was a daughter of the late John Andrew and Lula Conner Shepherd. She and Mr. Burleigh owned and operated Buck's Place in Concord for many years. She was a member of the Concord Garden Club and had volunteered as a pink lady at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Burleigh, in her later years, was a great comfort to and enjoyed helping her older sisters who were very special to her. She was a long time active member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Joel J. Burleigh; five sisters, Mattie S. Steele, Elizabeth S. Morris, Rachael S. Brown, Ruby S. Pugh, Thelma S. Simpson and her brother Harry D. Shepherd. She is survived by her son, Eugene Thomas Burleigh; grandsons, Clifton T. Burleigh (and fiancé’, Bonnie Johnson) and John E. Burleigh and wife Deana; great grandchildren, Matthew E. Burleigh and wife, Amber, Clay J. Burleigh, Tianna Toms and Lee Dawson; five great-great grandchildren, Kinley, Kassidy, Madison, Stevenson and James; one niece, June Reynolds and two nephews, Thomas Simpson and Ronald Pugh. The family wishes to thank Dr. Aponte, the Valley View staff and Lynchburg General Hospital physicians and staff for their compassionate care. A visitation will be held Saturday morning from 10-11 A.M. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel followed by a graveside service at Fort Hill Memorial Park at 11:30 A.M. with Rev. Dan Dibble officiating.
