Herbert J. “Burt” Gannon, age 75, of Venice, Florida, formerly of New Providence, New Jersey, passed away on April 22, 2010. He is survived by his beloved wife Joan of 48 years; three sons, Michael of Bigfork, Montana, John of Alma, Colorado, Jim of Venice, Florida; brothers, Robert (Norma) Gannon of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Englewood, Florida; Peter of Edmond, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, June Vollriede of Venice, Florida and grandchildren, Shamus, Jasmine, Liam and Sienna. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was born in Summit, New Jersey. Burt graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA and was a Chemical Engineer. His last position was with Bowen Engineering in Somerville, NJ as Manager of engineering before retiring and moving to Florida 18 years ago. He was a member of Epiphany Cathedral and served in the U.S. Army. He will be greatly missed by all his fellow beach goers and shark tooth hunters from South Venice Beach. Burt will be remembered fondly for his gentle ways and that straw beach hat with the bird feathers & sharks teeth. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 26, 2010 from 11:30AM- 12:30PM at Farley Funeral Home in Venice and a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:00PM at Epiphany Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the South Venice Beach Endowment Fund, 720 Alligator Drive, Venice, Florida 34293 or to the St. Francis Animal Rescue, 1925 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice, Florida 34293. Farley Funeral Home in Venice, Florida is handling the arrangements.
