Hilda Marie Cornelius

On Tuesday, September 17, 2013 the Lord saw fit to allow a daughter to be at her bedside when He ended Hilda's thirteen-year struggle with Alzheimer's. Hilda was born on February 29, 1924 and grew up during the Great Depression. She did very well in school and attended Ohio State University. She earned her degree in nursing but after a few years working as a nurse, she returned to her alma mater and accepted a position with the Historical Society. Hilda worked for Ohio State until she met and married Joseph Cornelius. She followed her husband during his career to many different assignments. Along the way they had five daughters all born in different states and one born overseas. Eventually settling in Florida first on the East coast and then moving to the Gulf coast. Hilda centered her life around God, her family and her friends many through a lifelong association with the Beta Sigma Phi women's sorority. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph Cornelius, and her two sisters, Mary Catherine and Geneva. She is survived by her five daughters, Mary Ellen, Norma Jean, Patricia Ann, Terry Lynn, and Jane Marie and five grandchildren, Donald Reeves, Elizabeth Ann, Christopher Joseph, Shannon Leigh and Brent Michael. Mom was our rock and her legacy lives on by instilling in her kids a strong belief in God, a sense of responsibility, respect, love and family. She will live on in our thoughts and we are comforted that she is finally at peace up in heaven. We would like to extend thanks to the staff at Family Traditions and Tidewater Hospice for their care during her stay. A celebration of Hilda's life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Farley Funeral Home.
