Huey Pierce Calhoun
January 9th, 1933 - February 27th, 2023
Huey Pierce Calhoun was born in Monroe, Louisiana on January 9, 1933, to the late Edward Weldon Calhoun, Sr., and Blanchie Lee Gray Calhoun. He passed away at the age of 90 at Windsor Gardens in Salinas, CA. on Monday, February 27, 2023. Huey was a resident of Seaside, CA since 1978. Huey dedicated his life to Christ at an early age and remained faithful to God until his death. Huey graduated from Monroe Colored High School in 1951, in Monroe Louisiana. He originally served in the United States Navy for two years before transferring to the United States Army. He retired from the Army after 23 years of honorable service with the rank of First Sergeant, having served in the Korean and the Vietnam War. He met his wife, Song Cha Choe, while stationed overseas in South Korea. The two were married on July 20, 1977. After service to his country, Huey was employed by United States Postal Services as a clerk where he retired after 20 years of service. Huey had many joys including cooking, reading the newspaper, and watching sports. He was an avid San Francisco 49ers and Giants fan. He was also a local sports fan, particularly the teams his sons played on and coached on. If you wanted some good southern cooking, he was the man to prepare you greens, yams, string beans, cornbread, bbq chicken, sweet potato pie, and bread pudding. And though he was quiet, he had a quick wit and a sarcastic sense of humor that would leave you laughing hard. Despite medical challenges, he led a full life as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Preceding him in death were his parents, Edward Sr. and Blanchie Calhoun, and his 5 siblings, Edward Calhoun, Jr., Vongie Lee Dunn – Calhoun, Claudette Jones - Calhoun, Alphonso Calhoun, Raymond Calhoun. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his wife, Song C. Calhoun of Seaside, CA.; his two loving sons, Vaughn A. Calhoun (daughter-in-law, Tamara Nelson Calhoun) of Voorhees, NJ, and Vernon J. Calhoun of Seaside, CA; his grandson, Vaughn A. Calhoun II of Voorhees, NJ and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. His funeral will take place on Thursday, March 16, 2023. His service will be at Mission Mortuary: 1915 Ord Grove Ave. Seaside, California 93955. He will be receiving a full military honors burial immediately after the service at the Central Coast Veterans Cemetery: 2900 Parker Flats Cut Off Rd, Seaside, CA 93955.
