James Joseph Mason, Jr. passed away on December 1, 2021, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth after a brief illness. “Jimmie” was born January 20, 1942 in Camden, New Jersey to James and Edna (Hawk) Mason. He moved his family to the Floodwood area in the early 1970’s. He was a retired member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and road trips. He always liked telling stories of past events in his life. In his later years he enjoyed feeding and watching the deer in the yard at his home in Cedar Valley. He retired from the Floodwood Fire Department in 2010. Spending some of his time there as Fire Chief, working hard to get grants for equipment and training materials. He was also a First Responder for the Floodwood Ambulance Service. Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sons (James III and Steven); and his Significant Other of over 30 years, Nancy Martin. Jimmie is survived by his son; Dennis (Dawn) Mason; daughter, Susan (Larry) Mason-Lommen; sister, Susan Autio (Tom Bertch); brother, Mike (Linda) Mason; 5 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A private family graveside service will be held in late spring at Forest Hill Cemetery, Van Buren Township. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins-Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet.
