Jerrold “Jerry” O. McCarthy, 76 of Venice, Fl, formerly of Springfield and the Aldenville section of Chicopee, MA died on February 19, 2018 in Venice. Jerrold was born February 13, 1942, the son of Lawrence J. and Evelyn (Caron) McCarthy. He was educated in the Chicopee school system and later attended area colleges and was certified in Advanced Logistics. He was in the Army and served as a court reporter with the V Corps Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany for 2 years and later served 7 months with the First Army Headquarters on Governors Island in New York where he received a Letter of Commendation from the Commanding General. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Spec4. Upon discharge he worked as a rate clerk for Universal Freight and then worked as a Logistics Coordinator for Hamilton Standard for 5 years. He then went back to Universal as a manager in Springfield and shortly thereafter he was promoted to manager of the Boston office. While in Boston he assumed the duties of Regional Operations Manager covering 6 New England offices and terminals. During his stay in Boston, Jerry was president of the Freight Forwarders Association of Boston where, during his tenure, he was able to successfully negotiate over 100 separate contracts between the Freight Forwarders and the Section 409 Carriers of the Interstate Commerce Commission Act. Deregulation of the industry caused the closing of Universal so Jerry came back to Springfield as manager of Boss-Linco Trucking, Clipper Express and he also worked for Pacific Intermountain Express all of which also closed due to deregulation. Jerry then went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Vehicle Operations and retired in 2004 with 23 years of service. Jerry was a past member of Delta Nu Alpha Transportation Fraternity, the Springfield Traffic Club, Boston Traffic Club and the Boston National Industrial Transportation League. He was a Life Member of the John Boyle O’Reilly Club in Springfield and the Disabled American Veterans. He belonged to the American Legion, Post 159, and to the Loyal Order of Moose, both in Venice, Fla. He enjoyed golfing and boating on the ocean and Conn. River. He was an avid Patriots, Red Sox and NASCAR fan. He especially enjoyed cruising with his wife and close friends Ray and Anne Picard to such areas as the Baltic Sea, Mediterranean, Panama Canal, Alaska, and to various Caribbean Islands. He most enjoyed his retirement cruise for 35 days starting in Australia, and continuing through Tasmania, New Zealand, several South Pacific islands, Hawaii then ending in Los Angeles. He also enjoyed the land tours of Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, Holland, Germany, and France. In our own country, together with his wife, he’s taken self guided and guided tours through nearly all 50 states. In 2017 he and his wife cruised for 30 days with tours in the British Isles, Republic of Ireland, France, Portugal and then the transatlantic crossing to Ft Lauderdale. Jerry leaves his wife of 37 years Kathleen A. (Coleman) McCarthy. He was predeceased by his son from an earlier marriage, Sean Patrick McCarthy, sisters Marlene Grohs and Regina Curtis and brothers Thomas and Daniel McCarthy. Visitation for Jerry will be on Tuesday, February 27th at 9am at Farley Funeral Home Venice. Graveside service will follow at 10:30am at the Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, FL.
