John de Vera passed away on May 25, 2021, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. John was born in Carmel, California to Jossie and Julius de Vera on December 27, 1960. He attended Carmel High and graduated from Sonoma State University with a degree in Sociology. He worked in both the fields of healthcare and hospitality. John was preceded in death by his father, Julius de Vera, Sr. He is survived by his mother, Jossie de Vera; brother, Julius “JR” de Vera (Laurie); his sister, Jennifer Yeager; and his nephews, Gabriel de Vera and Isaac de Vera. John lived life on his own terms. He embraced joy and lived each moment to the fullest, grateful for the chance to show kindness or offer a word of encouragement. John was an avid music lover. He played guitar and on special occasions he played and sang with his brother and nephews. He will be fondly remembered for his humor, laughter and creative lyrics. For the last decade of his life, John was the caregiver for his mother, Jossie. Many evenings were spent together sharing meals and rooting for the Warriors. In the days that have passed since John’s death, each night Jossie has been blessed by hearing John’s favorite songs in her head. She will always remember the love and joy he brought to her life. The family would like to thank Community Hospital doctors and staff for their care and compassion during John’s final days.

Mission Mortuary opened its doors in 1946 at a location on Munras Avenue in Monterey and moved to our current location on Camino El Estero in 1952. While times certainly have changed, Mission Mortuary has continually adapted to meet the evolving needs of our families....
