John Webb Olson

July 12th, 1963 - June 6th, 2024

John Webb Olson, 60, of Winter Haven unexpectedly died of natural causes Thursday at Winter Haven Hospital. A native of Polk County, he was a building contractor and proprietor of Olson Construction, based in Dundee. John and his crew renovated and built custom homes all over Polk County for many years.

John is survived by his wife of 27 years, Christy (Storey) Olson, and two sons Webb of Charlotte NC, and Luke, a student at University of North Florida.

John was a devoted member of Saint Nicholas Anglican Church in Poinciana where he served in many key roles on the vestry, managing finances and fund-raising. He spearheaded the efforts with parishioners to build a new sanctuary.

John took up golf at a very young age and graduated from Haines City High School in 1981, lettering in golf. After graduation, he enrolled at the University of Florida, where he majored in building construction and again, he lettered on the golf team. Like his father, he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. John graduated in 1985 and immediately entered the profession, working for other building contractors in the area. He renovated a building at the Olson family’s grove in Dundee, hung out his own shingle and that became his office. He joined the Winter Haven Country Club. In addition to golf, he was an avid deer and bird hunter.

John was extremely studious in school, habits which continued well into his professional life. He valued relationships and believed in the importance of a man’s word. He was a devoted family man, and took enormous pride in the accomplishments of his sons and wife. John was also very community focused, and he and Christy were often participants at community fund raisers.John is also survived by his sister Margaret Sotrop (Paul) of St. Petersburg FL and his brother Bill Olson (Arlese) of Winter Haven, and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, June 15 at 11 a.m. The church is located at 656 Ave L NW, Winter Haven, FL 33881. A Reception in the Parrish Hall will follow the service.

We had many great memories with John at the University of Florida and all the years afterwards playing at the annual golf tournament to talk about how our lives are going forward. John was one of the good ones and will be missed.

I knew John through our mutual love of Country Club of Winter Haven. He loved golf but he loved the fact that he could be a substantial force behind the success of our Club. We served on the Board of Directors together and he was like the old commercial from EF Hutton: but paraphrased: "when John Olson speaks, people listen". When he realized I was struggling in my committee role he stepped up and volunteered to by my co-representative from the Board. When my home had windows replaced and huge problems occurred, John stepped up and took over. My life is so much better because of John. He loved God and he loved neighbor. I was only one of many neighbors who benefited from his love.
