John Roscoe
March 16th, 1922 - September 1st, 2018
JOHN G. ROSCOE, Mining Engineer, Registered Professional Engineer March 16, 1922—September 1, 2018 John G. Roscoe of Lookout Mountain, Colorado passed away September 1, 2018 at age 96. John was a mining engineer, born March 16,1922 in White Sulphur Springs, Montana. Following high school, he began prospecting with his father in the Nevada City area of California. After serving in the Army during World War II, he used the G.I. Bill to graduate as a Mining Engineer from Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada. He started his mining engineering career at the legendary Bunker Hill in Kellogg, Idaho. The uranium boom of the 50’s brought him to Colorado and Utah. Mining eventually took him to nearly every state in the American West exploring and developing copper, uranium and gold properties. He headquartered in Grand Junction, followed by Tucson, Arizona before moving back to Colorado in the 70’s. John was a life member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, AIME. After moving to Lookout Mountain in Golden, John became a founding member of the Lookout Mountain Water District, serving as President of the Board of Directors. He was instrumental in providing engineering and management services for the development of the Upper Beaver Brook reservoir and water treatment facilities. Renamed the John Roscoe Reservoir and Dam, the development was dedicated in his honor July 2017. The system now provides quality water to over 500 homes in the mountains west of Denver. John’s endeavors always enabled him to be out-of-doors, preferably in the mountains. Family vacations often had an association with minerals, and a side trip to explore an underground tunnel was not out the ordinary. Rocks and ore samples were typical souvenirs. When he wasn’t working he enjoyed hiking –with a purpose, hunting, fly fishing and the occasional golf game. He loved vegetable gardening but gave it up when his engineering skills could not overcome the persistence of the neighborhood elk. A good book was never out of his reach. John always gave his best and expected and encouraged others to do likewise. His praise was a genuine and meaningful recognition of achievement. He is survived by his wife, Eugenie of Golden; his son, Robert Roscoe also a mining engineer and his wife, Laurie of St. Charles, Missouri; his daughter, Kathy Christy and her husband, Hal Ward of Anchorage, Alaska; stepson David Fulton and his wife, Erica West of Denver; stepdaughter Eugenie Schlittgen and her husband, Geoffrey of Durango; four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren who inherited the love of rocks. A memorial service will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery at 10:15 October 26. A reception will follow at noon at the Mt. Vernon Canyon Club of Golden. The family extends their appreciation to the Lookout Mountain Water Board and staff, the staff of Morningstar of Wheat Ridge, and Rory Trinder, John’s therapist.
