John Van Volkenburgh Sr., 79, passed away on Tuesday, July 4th, 2023 in Winter Haven, Florida. He was born in Syracuse, NY on June 2, 1944 to the late Helen and Willis Van Volkenburgh. John was employed by Sears and Roebuck Company for 18 years in the appliance repair department. He went on to work for the Eraser Company and eventually retired. For years John celebrated the Fourth of July with his family. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchild. John enjoyed watching Syracuse University basketball and he was a big NASCAR fan. He was predeceased by his mother, Helen Van Volkenburgh, his father, Willis Van Volkenburgh, his sister, Irene Stanton, and his brother Willis Van Volkenburgh Jr. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Joyce (Quilty) Van Volkenburgh and his children Barbara (Jay) Sauta, John Jr. (Catherine) Van Volkenburgh and James Van Volkenburgh and grandchildren Mai, Liv, Jenna (Tyler), Michael, Devin, Dakota, Natalie and Noelle and one great grandchild, Owen. Per John’s wishes, there will be no service. The family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to The Special Olympics.
