Jon Delano Goins “JD”, 82, of Saint Petersburg, Florida, passed away April 17, 2019, surrounded by family and friends. Goins and Anna Ellen Raglin Goins Kapustin, sisters Lois Jean and Janet, brother Jack Larue, and niece Elizabeth Ann Goins JD is survived by and left the loving arms of his sister Joyce Goins Slawson and James L. "Bud" Goins, son Gary Delano Goins, son Gregg Alan Goins, daughter Wendy Ann Goins and granddaughter Ashley Nicolle Goins DeWitt along with sisters-in-law Theda Ray Powers Miner Price Moore and Virginia Blackstone Goins Segar, brother-in-law James “Boozer” Moore, nieces and nephews (and their families) Pam Strickland, Paige Gosa, Valerie Goins Whitfield, Gwen Goins, Steve Goins, Karen Goins Morgan, Judy Goins Anderson, Robert Lewis Goins, Nadine L. Miner and Robert F. Miner Jr., Ex-wife and mother of his children Nadine Powers Goins Kruger along with the large “Home Kids" extended family from the Junior Order Homes in Tiffin, Ohio, and Lexington, NC. After his father passed of black-lung coal miners’ disease at age 36, and his father having been a fraternal member of the Junior Order United American Mechanics Association, JD at the age of six and his older siblings were able to be housed and educated at the Junior Order Orphanage in Tiffin, Ohio and then in Lexington, North Carolina. Here everyone thrived. The family grew beyond numbers as all the orphans became and have remained family until this day and beyond. “Home Kids” we are all now called, and everyone wears that title proudly. JD took every advantage possible to him. To that end, his brother Jack was his hero and was a master printer, and JD followed. JD also loved sports. He was a star football player in high school and played semi-pro football for the Miami Barracudas until a knee injury. He started his college degree in Engineering at North Carolina State University in Eastern North Carolina. At the Junior Order Home, JD met and married his high school sweetheart, Nelva Nadine Powers, and they moved to Miami Florida and had three children. JD earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida International University in Miami and a degree in Public Administration from Florida State University in Tallahassee, all while working full time and raising his children in the “60’s”.                             JD followed in his father’s and mother’s footsteps in his career choices. His father was a member of the Coal Miners Union until his death.  "JD saw his mother's hard work  as a "Rosie the Riviter" in the Detroit factories during the war and post-war era, which embued him with respect for women laborers and led him to advocate for equal treatment for women. " JD worked his way up the ladder in the printing trade and was elected President of the Miami Typographical Union. JD was the first to accept women into this local printers union. He was passionate in equal rights and his desire in helping anyone learn a trade to become proud self-sufficient Individuals. As such he entered into the Apprenticeship Training Arena. During this 30 year tenure, he was appointed by Governor Rueben Askew to be the Chief of the Bureau of Apprenticeship with the Department of Labor and Department of Education in Tallahassee, Florida. He was an active member in the Hialeah Jaycees, and he owned several businesses. His family, extended family and the “Home Kids” were his number one priority. Nothing came before that. His mantra was Live, Laugh, Love. He did not let any grass grow under his feet. His life was full of love and exciting adventures. No person was a stranger once JD met you, they became family forever. A service will be held Saturday, May 18th 2019, at 4:00 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Funeral Home, 1001 E.
