He was born on April 10, 1928 in Langgrun, Czechoslovakia, to Franz and Maria Shöttner Brettschneider. Josef was a proud U.S. Army veteran with over 23 years of faithful and honorable service. He became a United States citizen early in his career while stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and yard work. Josef was known for his tomato plants. His crops were always shared with those he cared for. Josef had a wonderful sense of humor and his dry wit and practical jokes were legendary. Josef is survived by two sons, Joseph M. Brettschneider (Terry) of Savannah, GA and Brian Brettschneider of Columbia, SC; a daughter, Diana Mashburn (Hugh) of Fletcher, NC; and a loving companion, Karrie Ann Hill of Columbia, SC. Josef is survived by his six grandchildren, Codi Edenfield-Estee, Lindsey Edenfield, Anna Brettschneider, Patrick Brettschneider, Hunter Brettschneider and Ashley Brettschneider; and a great grandchild, Samuel Vaughn. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews to treasure his memory. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Patricia Cotter.

Greenlawn Memorial Park

Greenlawn Memorial Park

Greenlawn Memorial Park is one of Columbia's most historic perpetual care cemeteries. This gorgeous setting combines serenity, natural beauty, and diligent care for generations of families. North Lake, located in the center of our park, offers a water feature and is the site of many local events, including an annual Easter sunrise service, a Greenlawn tradition for over 50 years. The park also has a veteran's section, private family estates, a columbarium with niches for cremated remains, and an incredible granite mausoleum....
