Kathleen (Kathy) Mathews of Nokomis, Fl died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on January 14, 2017. Born in Brooklyn, NY eldest of 2 daughters to John and Clara Luby. Kathy is survived by her husband Bob, her four daughters, Colleen Akula, Maureen Lavelle, Eileen Honicky and Jennifer Conway. 8 Grandchildren, Meghan, Brian, Logan, Will, Ryan, Neelam, Ian, and Nathan. Kathy was also blessed through her marriage to Bob with another daughter Adele Hughes and 2 more grandchildren, Derick, and Kristen, Kathy and Bob were married in January of 2002 after which they decided to spend their retirement years in Nokomis. Kathy flourished there and lived everyday to its fullest. Kathy and Bob joined Newcomers of Venice shortly after moving, where they met and joined with many people who shared similar interests. Shortly thereafter she was voted in as President of the organization. She has continued with and expanded on her friendships from their time in Newcomers. Kathy's competitive nature and sociality led her to playing board games where she could socialize and compete at the same time. She gained life long friends among her activity mates. Kathy volunteered at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in the NIC unit where she tested hearing in new borns. Kathy brought caring, love, and laughter into the many lives she touched throughout the area. A devoted Catholic she became a Eucharistic minister at St Thomas Moore and loved serving the church. Now she is at peace in the hands of her God. Services and internment will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday January 20, 2017 at St. Thomas Moore church in Sarasota. A celebration of life will occur in Morristown, NJ within the next couple of weeks. Time and place to be determined later. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to TideWell Hospice, Inc., 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
