Lauri "Larry" Francis Latvala, 92 of Superior passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 in Villa Vista Care Center in Cromwell. He was born April 20, 1927 in Tamarack to Matti and Lilja Latvala. Lauri attended elementary school in Tamarack and graduated from McGregor High School in 1945. After high school he joined the Army and served his country for two years. On March 31, 1949 he married Elvie Maijala in Aitkin. They made their home in Tamarack where Lauri farmed and logged. In 1956 they moved to Superior where Lauri worked as a defibrator operator at Superwood (later Georgia Pacific) in Duluth until retiring in 1989. Lauri enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. He was preceded in death by one son, Russell; two grandsons, Robert Latvala and Kyle Knudson; and 13 siblings, Fanny Beaudette, Ailie Anderson, Agnes Lehmann, Arlene Latvala, Richard, William, George, Arvid, Arne, Art, Eino, Norman and James Latvala. Lauri is survived by his wife, Elvie of Superior; children, Marilynn (Howard) Plucar of Plymouth, Randall (Chris) of Hibbing, Candace (Don) Knudson of Tamarack, and Roland (Debbie) of Chandler, AZ; daughter-in-law, Susan Latvala of Superior; siblings, Howard of Bemidji, Don of Blaine, David (Pat) of Rogers, Dorothy (Bob) Putnam of Scottsdale, AZ, and Doris Nordstrom of Missoula, MT; sister-in-law, Maggie Latvala of St. Francis; 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Visitation: 10:30 until the 12:00 Noon funeral service Wednesday, May 29, 2019 in the Atkins Northland Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Villa Court Senior Community Activities Program. Military Honors will be accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow in the Fireside Room of the funeral home. Burial will be in Salo Cemetery.
