Farley Funeral Homes and Crematory - Venice
Lawrence Russell Vaughan
May 25th, 1947 - July 17th, 2023
Lawrence Russell Vaughan,76, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2023. Larry left this world surrounded by the love of his family who were with him in Venice, Florida. Larry was the devoted husband of forty-nine years to Maureen McGinn Vaughan, a beloved father to his three children, Meghan (Giovanni) Macatangay of Naperville, IL, Brendan (Michelle) Vaughan of San Francisco, CA, and Kiera (Vincent) Esser of California, MD, and a doting grandfather to Conor Vaughan Macatangay, Ronan Vaughan and Wolfgang Vaughan Esser. Larry will be missed by his brothers Paul (Nancy) Vaughan and Kevin (Mary) Vaughan as well as his sister, Mary (Doug) Harvey. Following his early years in Illinois, Larry pursued his career as an attorney after his graduation from New York University Law School. He practiced law over many decades in both New York City and Chicago. Undoubtedly the most important position in Larry’s life was as an internship for Senator Charles Percy in the early 1970s. During that internship at an annual softball game between the Illinois Senators’ staffs, Larry caught a fly ball hit by Maureen McGinn, an intern for Senator Adlai Stevenson. At the teams’ postgame gathering at Clyde’s in Georgetown, Larry introduced himself to Maureen, and it was the beginning of a beautiful romance. Larry married the love of his life on September 8, 1973, and they were each other’s best friends since that day. Together they enjoyed many years of travel adventures throughout the country and internationally. After years of practicing law, Larry embraced his retirement in Florida. His favorite days were begun with his morning walks with Maureen and their dog, Nuala, on the beach. In his years in Florida, Larry continued his love of talking politics and reading voraciously. Although he never tired of following many teams in various sports, his much loved White Sox were the ones he cheered on through all years, be it a winning season or not. Larry was a deeply spiritual man whose faith was an inspiration to his family and those who knew him. He was loved and admired by those whose paths he crossed in his life. Larry’s legacy will live on through the memories of those who knew and loved him. He always will be remembered for his quick wit and ability to add humor to any conversation, often at a needed time. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Blake Vaughan, his mother, Ann Wetzel Vaughan and a brother, Blake Vaughan. A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 2nd at 11:30am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 1303 Center Road, Venice Florida 34292. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made in memory of Larry to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (www.ollvenice.org).
