Lucille Payne Stone transitioned from this life on June 7, 2016 in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the age of 94. She resided at Brookdale Skyline for six years and Medalion Nursing Center for the last four months of her life. She is survived by her biological daughter, Nancy Stone Bernard, and her "chosen" daughter, Sue Wilson, both of Colorado Springs; two grandsons, Zachary Colin Bernard (Tacoma, Washington) and Jacob Stone Bernard, (Brooklyn, New York); nephew, Richard Tanner (Texas); and nieces Sally Tanner King (Eden Prairie, MN) and Barbara Frakes (Denver). She is preceded in death by her dear husband, Athel Stone.Lucille was born on April 5, 1922 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Katherine Nentwig Payne and John Payne. She was a proud Classen High School graduate, attended two years at Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia, then returned to Oklahoma City to work for Oklahoma Gas & Electric Company. She returned to her studies at the University of Oklahoma where she obtained a bachelor's degree in psychology and was a member of Delta Gamma Fraternity, a Greek women's organization that she was actively engaged with for the rest of her life. She married Athel in 1954 at her beloved Westminster Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir for fifty years. She made life-long friends there, worked as a secretary in the church office and volunteered for many activities.Lucille and Athel had a profound impact on the classical music scene in Oklahoma City through their support of the Civic Music Association, Symphony, Pianists Club, and through Athel's many private piano students they hosted in their home. Lucille was always the "hostess with the mostest." A Celebration of Life is planned at Brookdale Skyline at 10:00AM, Monday, June 20, 2016, and later in Oklahoma City.In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center, The Nature Conservancy, Interfaith Alliance or Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lucille's memory. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Brookdale Skyline, Medalion Retirement Center and Pikes Peak Hospice for their loving care.
