Monterey- Margaret Joan Stember, known as Peggy Stanley in her youth, passed away June 1, 2013, after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 74 years old. Maggie lived life to its fullest. After the challenging-but-rewarding task of raising five children primarily on her own, she ventured out to many exotic places and embarked on great adventures. She has sailed the Pacific and the Caribbean, traveled to most of Europe and the Middle East, and touched the lives of so many. She eventually returned home to Monterey to be closer to her family. Maggie was an avid tennis player and was known for her outstanding backhand. She became a member of the Hyatt Tennis Club and was known to play tennis all day, even when her condition worsened. She leaves behind many wonderful tennis friends that care so much for her. She was always grateful for them. Maggie is preceded in death by her father, WWll veteran Joe Stanley. She leaves behind her mother, Elsie Stanley, Santa Cruz, CA; five sisters: Kathleen (Bob) Zausch, Pocatello Idaho; Betty Owens, Santa Cruz; Jeanette (Sandy) Hicks of San Francisco; Susan (Basil) Hernandez, San Jose; and Carole (Ken) Terras of Manteca. She also leaves behind her five children, Patty (Mark) Kintz of Marina; Annie West of Monterey; Jeannie Stember of Monterey; Rick (Pamela) Stember of San Luis Obispo; and David (Kirsten) Stember of Pebble Beach. Mission Mortuary - Monterey

Being centrally located on the Monterey Peninsula and adjacent to the San Carlos and Monterey City Cemeteries, Mission Mortuary has been the premier funeral home choice for Monterey and the entire Monterey Bay Peninsula for many years. Mission Mortuary opened its doors in 1946 at a location on Munras Avenue in Monterey and moved to our current location on Camino El Estero in 1952. While times certainly have changed, Mission Mortuary has continually adapted to meet the evolving needs of our families....
