MONTEREY - Long time Monterey Peninsula resident Margarita Maria Llano, entered into rest, Tuesday, October 1, 2013. She is survived by her daughter Lupe Hawk of San Antonio , Texas, son-in-law Travis; son, Pedro Llano of Salinas ; daughter Margie Fithian of Monterey; son-in-law Taylor; 4 grandchildren, Christine Standley Mock, Michael Standley, Allison Fithian and Madeline Fithian. She was preceded in death by her spouse of 50 years, Pedro A. Llano. 'Margot' was born June 10, 1928 in Guines, Cuba. She attended The University of Havana and graduated in 1951 with a BA in English. She taught high school level English in Cuba until 1959. On August 3, 1952 she married Pedro A. Llano. On October 10, 1961 she immigrated to the United States and lived in Miami, Florida until 1963 when the family relocated to Salinas. She attended the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies where she obtained both a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Spanish in 1978. She taught Spanish at Hartnell College from 1976-1982. She also taught Spanish at Notre Dame High School and the Defense Language Institute in the early 80's. She retired to Miami, Florida in 1984 and returned to the peninsula in 1996. Before her illness Margot enjoyed reading, philosophy, music, playing tennis, old movies, swimming, dancing, walking her dog and attending cultural events throughout the peninsula. A memorial mass will be held Monday, October 7,2013 at 1:30 in the Ave Maria Convalescent Hospital Chapel. A private interment for family will take place that afternoon. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be sent to Ave Maria Convalescent Hospital where she was so lovingly cared for.
