Marie Singer Hammond

Marie passed away at the age of 87 after a hard-fought battle with ovarian cancer. Marie grew up in New Hampshire with her twin sister, older sister, and two older brothers. She loved the beach in the summers, and often found work there so she could be close to the water. At only 19 years old, she joined the Army during the Korean War "to see the world", she said. For two years, she cared for wounded soldiers in Japan's Tokyo General Hospital, reaching the rank of Corporal. She is survived by her two sons, Rex and Rod Litchfield; and three granddaughters, Kristi, Megan and Sara. Marie had one great-grandson, Jordan. She was preceded in death by her second husband, Jack Hammond, of thirty-nine years. At the age of 45, Marie joined the workforce, starting as a dishwasher at a nearby nursing home. She ended her working career at 71 as a supervisor, serving twenty-five years at Farmers Insurance. During these years, she traveled extensively, taking many cruises and international tours. She will be remembered for her love of shopping and quilting, her contributions to the Woman's Army Corps Veteran's Association, and was especially loved by the local Red Hat Society and the Senior Citizen Center. Marie always looked for the good in people, was always the optimist, and was an inspiration to all who knew her for her courage and kindness.
