Melvin Frank Martins
November 26th, 1948 - November 2nd, 2022
Melvin Frank Martins passed away at his home in Prunedale, CA on Wednesday November 2, 2022. Mel was born November 26, 1948 in Monterey, California and attended Junipero Serra School, Pacific Grove High school, and Hartnell College. After graduation he joined the US Coast Guard attending Engineman ”A” school USN, Tracen, Great Lakes, Il, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Next graduating from Structural Fire Fighting school at San Francisco’s Treasure Island. Mel was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, having served 4 years on Government Island, Alameda, CA. After having fished with his father as a youth, he then bought his first commercial fishing boat, the “Stephanie Ann” (named after his niece). Mel next built a custom boat he named “St Ann” for the mid-Pacific and Hawaii albacore troll fishery, swordfish fishery, and coastal salmon. Mel eventually retired from fishing to pursue his 40 year passion for classic cars, becoming a loved member of the “Castroville Midnighters”. Mel made many great friends in his pursuit of classic cars. Mel is preceded in death by his parents Lillian and Frank Martins of Pebble Beach, CA, survived by his sister Kathleen A (Martins) Fosmark, and Mark S Martins, 1 niece Stephanie (Fosmark) Potter, 2 nephews Eric and Scott Fosmark and 8 grand nieces and nephews. A Rosary will be held on December 8, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. at Mission Mortuary in Monterey. Memorial Services will be on December 9, 2022 at San Carlos Cemetery, in the Santa Rosalia Chapel, at 10:30 a.m. Burial, with Military Honors, will be immediately following at San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey.
