Michael John Atencio
August 29th, 1949 - April 18th, 2022
Michael "Mike" John Atencio was born in Caon City, Colorado, and was the oldest of six children. I like to imagine the reunion with his father, Charlie, and mother, Dora (Archuleta) Atencio; as well as his brother, Greg; as they were waiting for him in Heaven, where he will know the fullness of God's presence, love and peace. He leaves behind his wife, Ana Maria Atencio; daughters, Monica (Eric) Ruhl, and Michele (Tim) O'Conner; sons, Michael (Michelle) Atencio, and Martin (Caitlin) Atencio; brothers, Carlos Atencio and Dave Atencio; sisters, Veronica Atencio and Karla (Brad) Reeves;and ten grandchildren. He graduated from Berthoud High School in 1967. This is where he met the love of his life, Ana Gomez. They were married in 1973 after he returned from serving in the Army and completing a tour in Vietnam. He and Ana increased the world's population by having four children, Monica, Michael, Michele, and Martin. The earth's population continued to grow as his children gave him and Ana eight grandchildren, plus two more through marriage. The marriage of Mike and Ana served as an example that a relationship can go through the toughest of times if both people are willing to stand with and for each other. Ana felt loved and a closeness with Mike through their relationship of fifty-two years, and especially as she cared for him through health issues to the very end.Throughout Mike's life, he was many things including a trumpet player, a candy maker, a salesman, a peacemaker, an outdoorsman, a veteran, a proud American, a racquetball player, and good cook. More than all these things, he was a believer in God. His faith and pursuit of God in his life, allowed him to minister to those around him. Mike helped many people throughout his life. Most people who met Mike would say he was kindhearted, loving, and a champion for others. He never proclaimed to be perfect, and was amazed that God could use him to minister to others who had gone through the same difficulties and struggles he went through.Even though he was going through all the health issues at the end of his life, Mike spent his energy trying to be an expression of love for his family. His final words expressed his desire to see the bonds between his family members be continually strengthened.Funeral Service, 2:00PM, Friday, May 13, 2022, The Springs Funeral Services-North, 6575 Oakwood Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80923.
