Mr. William John "Tuna Leader" Norton
August 23rd, 1936 - February 4th, 2020
Norton, William, J. SARASOTA, FL. William J. Norton, aka Tuna Leader, 83, transitioned into internal life on the evening of Tuesday, February 4, 2020, after a brief illness. William was born in Troy, NY the son of the late John J. Norton and Ann A. Boyland Norton of Troy. William was incredibly proud of his long-distinguished service with the Troy Police Department from 1963-1991. He served as a Sergeant, then onto leading the former Juvenile Unit, retiring as a Detective. William served in two branches of the Military as a young man, honorably discharged from the United States Navy and the United States Air Force serving from 1955-1962. William was a member of The TPD Police Benevolent Association, The AM Vets, The VFW, The American Legion and The Elks. Bill spent much of his young life vacationing in Lake George, NY on his boat enjoying time with friends and family, good fishing and good cheer. He was the founder of the infamous Boat Club the Tuna Fleet, of Lake George, NY. As life progressed, William made the transition to Florida enjoying the same at the Ocean. William is survived by his two daughters, Kathryn Anne Norton and Leslie (Scott) Combs both of Troy, his grandchildren Erica (Connor) Fitzgerald of New Jersey and Anthony Combs of Troy. He is survived by his brother-in-law Francis X. Ryan of North Port, FL and loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Jaqueline Shields of Cohoes, Sister Catherine Norton of Emmitsburg, MD, and Patricia Ryan of North Port, FL. William will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Calling hours will be held at Farley Funeral Homes and Crematory, North Port, FL on February 13, 2020 from 4-6pm.
