Norm Ottley was born to Norman F. and Marie Due Ottley on April 21, 1928. He was raised in Union, New Jersey during the depression which accounts for his many frugal habits. His father passed away when he was only 13 years old. He never talked about it much, but it must have been hard on him. Both his mother and step father were school teachers which helped him to excel in school. He just missed being made valedictorian of his high school coming in second. He was also captain of his basketball team and loved to play baseball. After graduating high school, he attended Bowdoin College. He loved Bowdoin so much; he gave up going to M.I.T., continued at Bowdoin and earned a degree in Chemistry. He always talked about Bowdoin and wanted his kids to go there. It was some of the best years of his life. He told many stories of freezing winters, filling the ice rink to play hockey and the experiments he volunteered for to earn a little extra money. There was Bowdoin memorabilia all over the house. After graduating from Bowdoin, he joined the Air Force and learned to fly during the Korean War. He was stationed in Japan where he flew planes with paratroopers or prisoners. After leaving the service, he went on to a successful career as a Manager and Executive in the chemical industry. He worked for Witco Chemical for most of his working career. He was Vice President of Witco and President of the Kenite division. He was able to travel the world with his work and visit many countries. He was lucky to be able to live in the towns he really loved, Basking Ridge and Westfield, New Jersey, then Larchmont, New York and Darien, Connecticut. His favorite was still Carmel-by-the-Sea, California where he was able to enjoy his retirement to the fullest. He loved the art galleries and local artists, all the wonderful restaurants and being close to Pebble Beach. He told the story of taking another company?s President out to play Pebble Beach and talk business. He said for the next 15 years, the only thing the guy talked about was playing Pebble Beach. He became one of his best customers. He loved playing golf, sailing, investing and following the New York Mets and Jets whether on the East Coast or West Coast. He was an accomplished golfer and sailor. We played many rounds of golf over the years at some of the best courses. He belonged to a country club in Darien Connecticut and we all played there several times. We always looked forward to playing golf with him. He enjoyed many vacations on lakes, camping and sailing with his family. He would always get out on his one man sail boat and head into the winds. He even sailed the one man boat at eighty years old. In 2001 he took the whole family out to Maine and was proud to show off his Alma Mater. He gave us a guided tour of the college with one of the students. It had doubled in size and gone co-ed since he went there. He loved his family very much and was a model of Honesty, Integrity and Etiquette for all who knew him. He was always there to support them. He passed away on January 6, 2013 at age 84. Norm Ottley was a great husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by immediate family, Joan his wife, Brother Howard Ottley, children Norman F. Ottley Jr., Lizabeth Terwilleger, David Ottley and his grandchildren Michael, Beth, Brian T., Bryon O., Christine and Christopher. He is survived by his extended family, stepchildren John, Reed and Jennifer and her children Drew and Kaitlin, his step-grandchildren Jennifer and her husband Dushawn Powell, Michelle and Her husband Lenny Prout and his step Great grandchildren, Savanna, Shelby, Jordan and Chase. We love you and miss you, Dad. A service will be held Saturday January 19th 2:00 P.M. at the Church of the Wayfarer Donations can be made to Church of the Wayfarer in lieu of flowers.
