WEAVERVILLE, NC—Funeral services for Pattie Hodges Whitehurst Britt, 97, of Weaverville, NC formerly of Columbia, SC will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia Sanctuary, 1324 Marion Street, Columbia, SC 29201. The Reverend David H. Lauten will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will greet friends from 1-2:00 p.m. prior to the service in the Atrium at the church. Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209 will be assisting the family. Mrs. Britt went to be with the Lord, on Friday, April 4, 2014. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi on March 22, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Newbern Henry Whitehurst and Mary Virginia Thigpen Whitehurst. She grew up in Greenville, NC and attended East Carolina Teachers College. She married the love of her life, James Russell Britt, Sr. on April 19, 1937. She was a former charter member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia; she was a Sunday school teacher and a Girl Scout Leader. Pattie was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution the University of SC Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy the Columbia Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists the Governor Joseph West Chapter, United States Daughters of 1812 the General Andrew Jackson Chapter, Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century the Governor Robert Gibbes Chapter, the Magna Charta Dames, Settler's Club of Columbia, Women's Club of Columbia and a Charter member of the Petal Pusher's Garden Club. Surviving are her son, James R. Britt, Jr. of Chapin, SC; two daughters, Nancy Stephens of Elgin, SC and Miriam B. Champion (James G.) of Weaverville, NC; grandchildren, Marty Stephens, Jimmy Stephens and John Stephens (Melissa) all of Columbia, SC, Charlie Britt of Chapin, SC, Scott Champion (Sarah) of Rutherfordton, NC and Natalie Doyle (Ryan) of Gray, TN; eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her late husband, James Russell Britt, Sr.; brothers, Newbern Whitehurst, Edgar Whitehurst, William Whitehurst and sister, Mary Frances Lewis.
