Pauline Winter-Sturges
January 25th, 1924 - May 14th, 2017
Pauline Sophie Grauberger, Winter, Sturges born to J. George and Marie E. (Steinmetz) Grauberger on January 25, 1924 in Garden City, Kansas. Pauline’s first sleigh ride was in January 1924 on her way home from the hospital during a winter blizzard. Pauline was the youngest of 13 children. She graduated from Deerfield High School, Deerfield, KS in 1942. On September 17, 1944 Pauline married Alden M. Winter at Deerfield, KS. Alden and Pauline were blessed with three children, Donald (1946), Robert (1948) and Janet (1949). While Alden was in the Navy, Pauline worked in Wichita, KS as a riveter manufacturing airplanes. The Winter family moved to Garden City, KS in 1951 where she enjoyed being a pitcher on a women’s softball team. In 1959 Alden, Pauline and family moved to Woodland Park, Colorado and Pauline worked in Colorado Springs, CO making parts for rocket guidance systems at Clifton Precision. Pauline also served as a Faith Lutheran Sunday School teacher. Alden and Pauline moved to Colorado Springs in 1971, lived in Knoxville, TN briefly and moved to Holyoke, CO in 1980, where Alden passed away in November 1982. Pauline served as a monitor at the Christian School in Holyoke. Pauline and E. A. (Stubb) Sturges were married July 12, 1987 in LaJunta, CO. They liked music and attended community senior dances where Stubb was the coordinator. Her husband, E. A. Sturges, passed away in November 2006. She resided in LaJunta, until moving to the Winslow Retirement Community, Colorado Springs, CO in December 2011. Pauline enjoyed researching genealogy (thus all the dates)—making many new friends and finding new relatives in the process. She loved nature and enjoyed a beautiful well-kept flower garden for many years. She loved animals–especially a Chihuahua friend named Tracy. Loved trying new recipes, often modifying the recipe to make it her own. The Denver Rockies were a favorite baseball team to watch. Kept in contact with her friends and family by email and had a knack of computer prowess,–learning to master her first computer when she was 80. Pauline always enjoyed sharing her life stories and events with detailed visits on the phone. She looked forward to going outdoors for her regular walks and check on her nature friends. One of Pauline’s favorite smiling moments was celebrating her 90th birthday complete with family watching her blow out her blaze of 90 candles. Pauline passed away at the Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO on Sunday, May 14, 2017. Internment at Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield, KS on Monday, May 22, 2017.
