Rachel Irene Hovis Landro

Rachel Irene Hovis Landro, 88 of Cloquet died Friday, December 9, 2011 in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton with her loving family by her side. She was born Dec. 4, 1923 in Duluth to Belgium immigrants Julius and Clotilde Colpaert. She grew up in Wrenshall and graduated from Wrenshall High School. Rachel worked at Diamond Match until 1949. She married Lawrence Hovis on August 7, 1948. She raised their four children and was active in their lives by participating in PTA and she was also a Girl Scout Leader. Rachel worked for the Cloquet School District from 1971 until retiring in 1988. Her husband Lawrence died shortly after celebrating their 25th anniversary. She married Alvin Landro on April 30, 1988. Rachel was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, and the Foresters. She was a former member of Sons of Norway. She was active in dance club, Wrenshall area Birthday Club, and a card club. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, reading, doing ceramics, and writing letters. After her retirement she enjoyed traveling and wintering in Florida and Arizona. She made four trips to Belgium and one trip to Norway. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Lawrence Hovis (1974); her second husband, Alvin Landro (2003); sister, Josephine Loisel and son-in-law, Wayne Lowe (1997); and two infant brothers, Joseph (1927) and Ronald(1943) Colpaert. She is survived by her four children, Linda (Jim) Bassett of Cloquet, Roger (Judy) Hovis of Zimmerman, Les (Judy) Hovis of Cloquet; and Rita Lowe of Cloquet; two sisters, Bernice Reed of Cloquet and Betty (Joe) Townsley of Cloquet; eleven grandchildren, Troy and Eric (Barb) Bassett, Scott (Kristi) Kubista-Hovis, Heidi, Adam (Sarah), and Keith Hovis, Jeremy and Lance Hovis, Ryan (Becky) and Randy (Kari) Lowe; and Jenna (Kory) Murray; 10 great grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews; and family in Belgium. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet. Burial was in New Calvary Cemetery. A time of lunch and fellowship followed in the church social hall. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Rachel and Alvin Landro Music Scholarship Fund.
