Richard Gallant

June 25th, 1957 - January 30th, 2020

Obituary Richard Ricky Gallant, age 62, passed away quietly on January 30, 2020 at home in Gold Hill, CO. He was born on June 25, 1957 in New Jersey, on the wedding anniversary of his parents Richard James Gallant and Elizabeth Clara Shive. He was a graduate of Colorado State University with a degree in Physics. Ricky worked as a Senior Optical Engineer for Guidestar Optical Systems, Inc. in Longmont, CO. He could be seen strolling around the mountain working out some intricate mathematical equation for a project he was working on, determined to discover the answer. An avid music lover, he was often seen with his beloved Taylor guitar playing a Dylan or Garcia song and almost always wearing what close family called, his Bobby Weir shorts. He loved the mountains, sunny skies and long walks. He is survived by his brother, Capt. Rex Gallant; his sisters Randibeth Gallant (who he affectionately called Rudi); Robin Bogdanski; Roxanne Seigel; brothers-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in his passing was Ronald Gallant, a brother. Family and friends whose lives were touched by Ricky can leave messages on his tribute page at: BlueMountainMortuary.com. A memorial celebration will take place this spring/summer at Gold Hill Inn, Boulder, CO. Rick was one of my three younger brothers. Growing up with him was so much fun. He was sensitive and intellectually stimulating as we grew older. We often shared different points of view but I like to believe we learned from one another. I wish I had seen him more after he moved to Colorado, but in our communications it was clear being out there suited him as he loved the outdoors and mountains. He loved his music and as soon as he picked up a guitar so many years ago I could see immediately it would be his solace in life. I will miss being able to talk to him, but I know he is out there in the mountains somewhere singing with the forest creatures.

My brother. My protector. My friend. Rick, or Ricky as he preferred to be called, was the best. Growing up he let me trail along when playing with the older kids. Tag, ice football (ouch!), chicken fights, going to see live music, he included mewith one stipulation. As long as I didnt cry - haha! Guess what one of my first life lessons was? Toughness. Of course if I was hurting, who would be right by my side? Ricky. When I was 16 I had a fake ID so I could go to the bars and see the music. (It really was more about the music than the beer!) Ricky would make sure I was always safe. If someone asked me to dance, hed walk over, introduce himself and let it be known that he was just a big brother hanging out right over there. He took me (along with my brother, Rex) to my first concert, the Grateful Dead. He held my hand so he could get me close to the stage. We meandered through thousands of people, dancing and singing together to "Eyes of the World". It was the best time! I couldn't ask for a better way to begin my concert experiences. He taught me my love for music. He'd say, "Hey Rudi, let's take a tour of the albums!" Which meant he'd break out all of the vinyl and play the Dead, Dylan, Hendrix, Traffic, you name it. I remember the album that had the coolest marble design, Dave Mason. We would "tour" for hours. Years later after Jerry Garcia died he turned me on to Tim O'Brien and Sam Bush. He was the inspiration behind my decade-long radio show "The New Grass Attack".He was my special confidant and the person who gave me confidence as a young girl, a teenager and a woman. He was my beloved brother, Ricky.Dear Ricky, Ill always hold you close in my heart, hear your laugh and remember all you showed me. All my love, Rudi xoxo

I didn't know Ricky well, but he was friendly and happy to say hello and visit a bit whenever I ran into him. I know he loved playing music, and I have a CD of the Dylan tribute that the Inn put on as a benefit for Hospice that he sings and plays on. He was a good guy and gone too soon. RIP Ricky. You all in his family have all my sympathy. Gretchen Diefenderfer

I lived across the street from Ricky for 8 years, and down the street from him for another 4. I, like everyone else, loved Ricky. He'd often sit on his porch, playing his guitar, or he'd have his windows all open, and you'd hear his singing ringing down the street. One day I came home with a guitar of my own, determined to learn how to play. As I sat on the porch strumming the same cords over and over, Ricky came by to offer me encouragement. When later I came home with an inherited electric guitar, Ricky gave me some lessons and let me have his smaller amp that he didn't need. Over time I got a little better, then the Inn decided to start an open mic night. Ricky was very shy and wasn't going to play. I didn't think I was good enough to try. We convinced each other that we should both go together. Even when he showed up, guitar in hand, and signed up for the open mic, he still wasn't sure he'd play for everyone. In the end he did, and he played absolutely beautifully. Eventually he helped run the event for the community. He had a soft and gentle voice that was always in tune, and everyone in town loved to listen at every opportunity. Ricky was such a gentle person. Every time I saw him, he'd give me a hug and ask about my life, my husband, my children, and anything else. He loved chatting and listening to music. He loved to take long walks (always in shorts) all up and down the hills. He'd talk about what a beautiful day it was, and how he's doing. He was usually talking about some physics problem that he was trying to figure out. I never knew what he was talking about- it was all way over my head. But he'd talk about it anyways, as if he was talking about the weather. When I learned of Ricky's passing, we were scheduled to have a talent show the next day at the Gold Hill School. (I am the school teacher there). I wasn't planning on performing, but when I heard about Ricky, I knew I had to. I gave a short speech about him to the school community and then played John Prine's Angel From Montgomery. That was the fist song I learned to play on the guitar, and Ricky helped me with it. It was also the song I played at that first Open Mic Night. Everyone in this community loved Ricky dearly, and he will always be missed. All my love goes out to your family in this time of sorrow.

I always loved seeing Ricky. He always had kind words and a huge smile for me. Initially he was very shy, but then opened up and shared stories about his projects, and his music, and we talked about our mutual love of walking. He always asked about me and what I was up to. He was often the bright spot in my day, after hours alone in my studio. I was so surprised to hear that he was gone, and I'll miss him. Sending love and comfort to his family.

My buddy RickyRicky and I are walkers, he is still walking somewhere, blissfully. We would meet on the road walking and chat for a few, then off in opposite directions we went. I would finish an hour long walk, shower and head to Boulder, when I would run into him again, on the road still walking. He loved to walk. We met years ago when he lived across the street from me, then he lived next door. For all those years he would, unbeknownst to him, serenade me while I had my morning coffee, gardened, or sun bathed. His Hot Tuna went straight to my heart. I tried to convince him to go public with his talent, I liked his way of singing Bob Dylan so much more than Bob. He would play The Grateful Dead loud on his stereo and dive into Jerry Garcias guitar solos on his guitar with a precision that astonished me. I saw Jerry play many times..., so I know. He never saw me dancing in my yard to his skills. We spent so many evenings chatting and I learned how in touch with being real he was, so honest and optimistic. I was an incredibly diverse being. What a joy to have known Ricky. See you on the road again someday, Ricky, for now, you are missed. Love, Leslie

Rick was the middle of my 3 younger brothers. I have so many fond memories of fun times with my brother Ricky, it was a funhouse for sure. He was a sensitive soul, and while we had many different views on many different topics, I would like to think we both learned from one another. I remember he would tell me potato chips could not make you fat, they were too light. Ha! I will miss not knowing he is here with us, but I am sure he is now exploring his beloved mountains without any barriers. Say hi to Mom, Dad, and Ronnie. Watch over us. Love, your big sister. My brother Rick,Just so many memories and I'm flooded with them all.Rick was my best friend, my confidant but mostly a great brother. Supportive of my choices. The voice that called daily for years while I worked through a life altering accident. The man who stood strong with fortitude and resilience through life's challenges. The brother that ran to my side when I lost my love. Rick loved Denise and we grieved together. A great brother because it's hard for Rick to handle strong emotions. I will always be grateful to him.Just so many stories of backpacking adventures. Concerts, bar bands and playing songs and writing lyrics.Sailing in lake Meade, FL east coast, Elephant Butte where he had decided to retire come Christmas. We fought as brothers do but our love for each other always prevailed. I still find myself waiting for his video call or I'm going through the motions of forwarding something.Rick was there for me or anyone who asked. Rick was a pure thinker and saw the beauty of things and wanted all to share those happy visions.Rick loved his friends in Gold Hill and often spoke about how much he liked and appreciated his bosses, Aaron and Troy. They reminded him of his brilliance and kept him busy.As Rick and I spoke of the oncoming days we spoke of the things we wanted to do together. Redwood forest, Yellowstone, cruise to the PCH. It was 1979 in Morristown NJ, we worked together at an insurance company.I didnt know him well, it didnt matter. He was shy, funny and friendly, everyone who worked with him loved him. He left that job before I did and I was never sure where he went. Just learning of his passing makes me sad - such a great smile too!
