Robert "Bob" W. Corcoran
April 20th, 1939 - February 6th, 2021
Robert W. Corcoran ("Bob"), 81, of Englewood, Colorado, passed away on February 6, 2021 after a long illness. Bob was born in 1939 in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up locally, graduating from Millis High School and Boston University. He served as a 1st Lieutenant United States Air Force from 1960-1964 in the 740th Missile Squadron and was stationed at the Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. After his honorable discharge from the USAF, Bob returned to the East Coast working for Johnson & Johnson where he met and married Frances E. Mangina. Shortly thereafter the newlyweds moved to Missoula, Montana where Bob graduated from University of Montana Law School with a Juris Doctorate in 1973. After the birth of their daughter, Jennifer, the family lived in Helena, Montana, before moving to Belle Mead, New Jersey and ultimately settling in Englewood, Colorado, where Bob worked for US West, COST and Morrison & Foerster until his retirement. Bob continued to reside in Englewood following the death of his wife Frances. Bob was an avid hiker, skier, runner, explorer, and storyteller, spending countless hours walking in Cherry Creek State Park, and exploring Colorado and Wyoming with his long-time life companion, Zina Lutz. He loved to travel, especially with Zina and Jennifer, whether it be to Mt. Hood in Oregon, the shores of Boston Harbor, the ruins in Rome, or the rolling hills of Virginia, and was particularly taken with the breathtaking natural beauty of his ancestral home of Ireland. Bob had a true kindness of spirit, a twinkle in his eye, an infectious laugh, a firm handshake and a story to tell for friend and stranger alike. He was known for his ability to make people feel cared for and remembered; if you met Bob once, you would never be a stranger again, he would remember you and seek you out to say hello, ask how you were, and find something common to laugh over. Bob loved his family, and his grandchildren were one of his greatest joys. Whether it be Thomas with his soulful eyes and abundant spirit or Robert with his quick wit and expressiveness, Bob’s image and wisdom shines on through them each day. Bob was larger than life with a gregarious and outgoing personality, steely reserve when needed, gentleness of thought and an overwhelmingly infectious and joyful spirit who was loved and adored by his friends and family like none other. Perhaps, one of his greatest gifts was in the practice and advice of restraint. For those Bob knew, who were more prone to dash off a word or two on paper to get their point across, he would say to put that letter or email in a drawer for a while, and then read it again, since they might find that there was gentler way to get the point across. Many friends, family and acquaintances have come to know this as the "Bob Corcoran Rule," and have found that it has helped them to not rush in, and to think more about how others might see things, first. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Marjorie, his wife Frances, and his cherished sister Marie. Bob is survived by his sister, Joan Higgins of Quincy, Massachusetts, daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Paul Straton of Garden City, New York, grandsons Thomas and Robert Straton, long-time life companion Zina Lutz of Denver, Colorado, mother-in-law, Lucie Mangina of Ft. Myers, Florida, his sister and brothers in law, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. Arrangements are through All Veteran's Funeral and Cremation in Denver, Colorado. Memorial Service and internment will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, at a date to be determined. Donations can be made to Denver Voice of which Bob was a long-time supporter and/or the Adaptive Sports Foundation, which provides ski instruction to injured veterans and children with disabilities and is where one of his grandsons learned to ski.
