Robert Oscar Cummins
August 13th, 1921 - April 16th, 2004
Robert O. Cummins, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away suddenly April 16, 2004 from an aortic aneurysm. A pillar of strength for his family, his Church, and the community, he will be greatly missed for his wonderful spirit and integrity. Robert was born August 13, 1921 and as been a Mesa resident for all of his 82 years. He attended Mesa High School, graduating in 1939. Bob served his country during World War II as a B-24 bombardier, flying 35 combat missions. Following the war, Robert earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Arizona State University in 1945. Early in his business career he operated Cummins and Kellis, and insurance and real estate agency. Along with his partners he developed and owned the Mezona Motor Hotel and the Dobson Ranch Inn and was active in management until the time of his death. Some of Robert's community involvement included being the first President of the Mesa Multiple Listing Service, President of the Mesa Rotary Club, Vice President and Director of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, President of the Mesa United Fund and former director of Rio Salado Bank. Robert was a High Priest in the LDS Church and served as a Stake Employment Specialist and as 2nd Assistant to the High Priests Group Leader. He loved golf and was an original member of the Mesa Country Club. Bob enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping trips with his family, fishing trips to Roosevelt Lake, and hinting trips to northern Arizona. However, his happiest times were at the beach every summer surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Robert was preceded in death by Merlene, his wife of 50 years, and brother Richard. He is survived by his sister, Ila Lowe; five children: Tom Brewer Millie, Carolyn Campbell Westphal Stan, Roberta Trone Guy, Kimberly Neville Scot, and Celeste Wardrop Brad; 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Sunshine Acres Children's Homes, 6405 N. Higley Road, Mesa, AZ 85215
