Roland E. Sawtelle
May 23rd, 1919 - September 6th, 2011
– ROLAND EARL SAWTELLE, affectionately known as Ronnie or Grampy, originally a resident of Maine who established a home in Englewood, Florida, in 1971, passed away on September 6, 2011. During the last several months of his life he was a resident of Sunset Lake Village in Venice, Florida. He was 92 years old. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 69 years, Elizabeth (Betty), in 2009. The survivors include their son Peter Sawtelle and his wife Eileen of Poinciana, Florida; their daughter Cynthia Cordwell and her partner Bruce Barnes of Lewiston, Maine; 5 grandchildren: Debora, Peter Jr., Dawnalyn, Michelle, and Michael ; 6 great grandchildren: Nathalie, Jaden, Curtis, Connor, Jaycee, and Brendan; his sister Muriel Loignon of Englewood, Florida; his 2 brothers: Elwin of Englewood, Florida; and Robert of Portland, Maine; niece Jennifer Sawtelle of Englewood, Florida; nephew Stephen Sawtelle of Englewood, Florida, and Connecticut.; sister-in-law Marjorie Black of Orrs Island, Maine; and several other nieces and nephews. Roland served in World War II as a flight engineer on B-24 aircraft. He worked for Cushman Baking Company for many years while they raised their children in South Paris, Maine. Later in life, Ronnie and Betty retired together from owning and operating the Four Seasons Campground in Naples, Maine, to enjoy life full time in Florida. They both enjoyed golf as members of the Myakka Pines Golf Club in Englewood, Florida. They were great travelers, going to every state in the United States, mostly in their motor home, exploring destinations in Europe, China, and South America, as well as the Caribbean islands. For several years they owned a sailboat they named the “Downeasta” in which they sailed to numerous islands throughout the Caribbean and even venturing into the Atlantic Ocean. They were the best of friends through out their lives, and much cherished by their descendants.
