Nitardy Funeral Homes - Fort Atkinson

We have proudly served the Southern Wisconsin community for over 90 years, when Hilmar A. Nitardy opened his first funeral home in the area. In 1984, his son Russ knew it was time to offer professional, compassionate services to the Fort Atkinson community, and we constructed a new funeral home to address its needs. We feel so fortunate to be a part of the community, and have grown our family alongside the community for three generations.

Steve was one of my favorite people that I have known. We were very good friends during our high school and early adult years. Besides being one of the funniest people I knew, Steve was also one of the smartest. We shared common interests in pursuing fun regardless of what other people thought of us, sharing our favorite music (the only person I knew who liked Frank Zappa as much as I did), and generally figuring out life during those early years. I always enjoyed and appreciated Steve’s unique perspective on the world. Our paths diverged by our mid-20’s, but I am so grateful to have known Steve when I did. He is someone that I will never forget. Steve died too young, but Steve did so much “living” in the years he was given. All who knew him also were also lucky to have been filled with that joy of living because of him. One interesting story about Steve after not seeing him for a long time. I was driving to work and there was a caller on the air during one of the local radio morning shows. This guy was funny and a bit off the wall. I recognized who it was immediately. I got in touch with him by phone after that. I was so glad to hear how great his life was going and how much he liked that he was starting as a teacher and working with high school kids. I knew he had so much to offer those kids. We agreed we should get together, but sadly that was the last time we spoke. I wish we could have spent time together later in life. Goodbye my friend.

What is your favorite memory shared with Steve?

He was my roommate after high school and we very much enjoyed playing with sleezeball and Motorunit in their habitrail. He was a wonderful person and a great friend. Tim Becker

One of our students took this picture. I am so glad we have him wearing the shirt. He came up with the saying on the top to go with his pic. lol

My heart is broken. Steve was always there for a great conversation, a laugh, and to fix your flat tire... He was a great writer and his book was full of his life stories. One of my favorite work stories was when he came to my classroom one day and said "I always wanted a shirt with my face on one side and the back of my head on the other...So that is what I made him! It took off and lots of students wanted them too. He was so happy that Panther Printing was making money off his face! He ask me daily how many more shirts we sold! He was an awesome teacher and the truest of friends! Rose loved her lunch buddy and he will always be in our hearts!

The Ostermeyer Family - Jeff, Tess, Zack & Luke

I knew Mr. Armin only from PEHS and more specifically from meeting him at parent-teacher conferences. Though our contact was limited, he gave off such a good feeling. I connected with him immediately and he reminded me much of my own Father. I learned of his passing last night via social media. Our hearts are heavy for his family. May he find his way to his eternal home and find some friends up there along the way that have gone before him. May you, Dawn, eventually find peace as you work your way through your grief. Each prayer we send, I have learned, is received as a golden rose. I will include him in my prayers. God Bless you and yours.

Steve was a lifelong friend. We both attended Samuel Morse Jr. High School in Milwaukee, and remained friends for the next 50 years. He was the funniest guy I've ever known, and had almost no filter. You never knew what would come out of his mouth, but you knew it would be funny and often make you cringe (Steve, you can't say that!). I remember when he met Dawn, and I was later honored to be his best man at their wedding. We lost touch for awhile, but Steve reached out to me via email and we reconnected about 10 years ago. We just picked right back up where we had left off. He emailed me each chapter of his book, asking for my feedback. I hope it gets published some day. Lots of great childhood stories in there. Every summer Steve and I would get together to go fishing, especially after he bought his boat a few years ago. In fact, we just went fishing together in June. Sharing a boat with him was always a blast. We didn't catch many fish, but man we always had a great time filled with laughter and talking about the old days. We recently talked about retirement, and he remarked that he should retire sooner rather than later because his parents died in their 70's. Genetics were not in his favor. How prophetic. You died too soon old friend!! I'm going to miss you!

Steve was a wonderful colleague. I really enjoyed his sense of humor and easy going personality. He and I worked collaboratively for almost 20 years. I missed him so much after he left that when the chemistry job opened up I reached out to see if he would come back to PEHS, and he did. He was a beloved member of our PE family and will be greatly missed. Steve was a great teacher and friend and his absence will leave a big hole in my heart.
