Theodore Urban
August 24th, 1923 - August 19th, 2016
Theodore (Ted) Urban Sr. of Monterey, CA and formerly Stamford, CT and Fresno, CA, was born in Stamford on August 24, 1923 to Sam and Bessie Urban. He graduated from Stamford High School Class of 1941 and entered the Army Air Force during WWII shortly thereafter. He served with the 20th Air Force, 40th Bomb Group, 58th Bomb Wing and the 395th Squadron on a B-29 crew as a specialist gunner. He participated in battles and air campaigns including India-Burma; China; Air Combat Palembang Sumatra and Central Burma and Air Offensive Japan. He was awarded numerous medals for his service including an Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Asiatic Pacific Medal with five bronze stars, Presidential Unit Citation and Good Conduct Medal. After the WWII, Ted returned to Stamford and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed by American Machine and Foundry, Inc. (AMF) in Stamford, Grumman Aircraft in Bethpage, NY and Perkin-Elmer in Danbury, CT and Sunnyvale, CA. Ted proudly contributed to both the Apollo moon landing mission and the Hubble Space Telescope during his working career. Ted is predeceased by his first wife, Helen Zikas Urban of Stamford and formerly, Port Chester, NY and most recently his second wife of almost 30 years, Bernice Ferguson-Urban. He is also predeceased by all seven of his brothers and sisters. He is survived by two sons, Ted Jr. of Fountain Hills, AZ and Robert J. of Viera, FL and formerly Bethel, CT and family members Walt, Wendy and Lloyd Ferguson of Seaside, CA. In retirement, Ted enjoyed following professional golf and the many excursions to the casinos in Atlantic City, Reno and Lake Tahoe. Most importantly, he was devoted to, and caregiver to, his wife Bernice up until her passing in 2015. Memorial Service, Friday, September 2, 2016 at 2PM at the Sunrise of Monterey. Donations can be made in his memory to the 58th Bombardment Wing Memorial at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT or the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery, checks payable to "The Community Foundation for Monterey County".
