Denver resident former Ft. Garland resident Vannetta Louise Castro, 61, passed away April 30, 2016 at her home. Vannetta was born on October 18, 1954 in Traverse City, Michigan, the daughter of Vanmore Joseph Duperron and Geraldine Ruby Thomas Duperron. Vannetta worked as a teacher for many years and received many awards including teacher of the year. On her free time she enjoyed reading, writing, playing cards, going jogging and swimming, quilting, sewing and doing crafts. She was famous for her cooking, and her great sense of humor. Vannetta's greatest joy in life was the time she spent with her family and friends and especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband Pete Castro of Denver, CO; daughter Jozette Sandoval of Ft. Garland, CO; son Gene Atencio of Westminster, CO; grandchildren Elisia Sandoval, Fidel Sandoval, Brooklyn Sandoval all of Ft. Garland, CO; great-grandchildren Zachery, Xavier and Uriah all of Ft. Garland, CO; step-children Peter Castro Jr., Danny Castro, Donald Castro, Allen Castro, Gabriel Vigil all of Denver, CO; father of her children Edward Atencio Sr., of Ft. Garland, CO;sisters Lorraine (Dean) Hawley of Sublette, KS; Valerie (Del Roy) Spurgeon of Gate, OK; Lucinda Duperron of Ashland, KS; Fredonia (Brad) Harris of Holton, KS; Lisa (Billy) Claxton of San Antonio, TX; Kathleen (Marc) Krier of Ashland, KS; brothers Vanmore Duperron Jr., of Ashland, KS; James (Kristin) Duperron of Woodward, OK; Shawn (Jo Linda) Duperron of Wichita, KS. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Vannetta was preceded in death by her parents Vanmore and Geraldine Duperron, infant daughter Tiffany Dawn Atencio, brother Anthony "Butch" Duperron , two sisters Judy Buckley and Leona Hudson. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the United for Christ Community Church in Blanca. Interment will follow at the Blanca-Ft. Garland Community Cemetery in Ft. Garland. In lieu of flowers, family requests that any contributions be made in her memory in care of Romero Funeral Home of Alamosa, 1407 State Ave. Alamosa, CO. 81101.The care of arrangements has been entrusted to Romero Funeral Home of Alamosa.
