Age 94, of St. Paul, MN Verna graduated from Barnard College in 1943. She served in the U.S. Navy during World War II where she worked decoding messages which she never, never divulged, even when pressed by family members. She did cryptoquips and word challenges daily. She and her husband settled in St. Paul in 1989. Verna was an active volunteer and passionately interested in world events until her last days. Preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. Beaver, Verna is survived by her children, Susan (Sherman Eagles) Conner of St. Paul, Ellen (William) Lea of Savannah, GA, and Thomas A. (Mary Bodie) Beaver of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Tyson (Megan McGinnis) Conner, Adrienne (Jeff) Schucker, Eric Housley, Joseph (Bridget Cross) Housley, and Katlyn B. Beaver; and great-grandchildren, Amelia and Josephine Schucker, James Conner, and Rye Housley. Service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 901 Portland Ave., St. Paul, MN 55104. Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials to St. Clement’s Episcopal Church or Barnard College preferred.
