William R. Chapman, age 92 of Venice, Florida, formerly of Grosse Isle, Michigan, passed away on August 2, 2009. He was born on April 28, 1917. His beloved wife, Mary, preceded him in death in 2000. He was a U.S. Army Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and served as the navigation squadron officer with the B-24 bomber “Heart’s Delight” during World War II. Ray led missions deep into Germany from his base in Italy. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Airman’s Medal. Ray continued to serve his country as an Air Force reservist from the Selfridge Air Force Base in Michigan. He was the Commodore of the Grosse Isle Yacht Club in 1968 and a Life Member Mason and Eminent Commander in 1957. After World War II he was an engineer designing vehicles and components. Survivors include his sister in law, Ruth Durham of Venice, FL, niece, Carol Mock Lehrman of Venice, FL, nephew Robert Lehrman of Venice, FL, nephew David Lehrman and wife Terry of Shelby, Michigan. Interment will be at the Sarasota National Cemetery on October 16, 2009, with full military honors by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Farley Funeral Home in Venice, Florida is handling the arrangements.
