William Zane
February 27th, 1921 - June 25th, 2018
Bill passed away on June 25, 2018. He was born in Niles, Michigan on February 27, 1921 to Duane and Lura Zane. Bill is an alumnus of Jackson Jr. College and Michigan State University, majoring in Chemistry. He was a member of his High School State Championship Swimming and Diving Teams and swam on College teams. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corp Aviation Cadet Program receiving his Pilot wings and Commission in January 1944. During World War II he flew 52 combat missions in the European Theatre advancing to the rank of Major as Flight Leader and Operations Officer. Among the ten medals received for valor, he was the proudest of being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight and actions above and beyond the call of duty. Also, four air medals for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight along with two Presidential Citations. After military service, Bill spent most of this business career in the property and casualty insurance business starting as a commercial property fire insurance rater, then as a fieldman assisting Michigan insurance agents in providing property and casualty insurance for commercial establishments and advancing to position manager of the Michigan field office. Finally, he owned a property and casualty agency in Florida. He loved to play golf and was a long-time member of the Jacaranda West Country Club. He had four holes in one and was a senior club champion in Michigan. Bill was preceded in death by his first wife Virginia, and two brothers, Richard (Dick) and Perry Zane, as well as his sister Elizabeth drake. Surviving are daughters Mary Anne Porter and Nancy Jeanne Reese; wife Evelyn M. Zane; 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Saturday, June 30th from 10-11 am with a service to follow at 11 at Farley Funeral Home, Venice, FL. He will be laid to rest with military honors at Venice Memorial Gardens in Venice. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
